Getting Better Product Photos for eCommerce

Amazon – The Empire Sells Back

It’s no secret that Amazon is currently dominating the world of eCommerce and online retail. Both nationwide and international consumers contribute to the 2.4 billion monthly visits that Amazon welcomes and ultimately thrives on.

Although you may not have aspirations of pushing your eCommerce website to the “Amazon” level, it is instructive to learn from industry leaders like Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Etsy.

According to Big Commerce, even after finding a product on a competitor’s website, 90% of people will head to Amazon and search for the same product. What is the empire doing on their website that is building credibility with their customers and creating a gateway for trust that has been unwavering?

Sale Wars – The Photo Menace

According to a new study by PR Newsletter, more than half of online shoppers think that product photos are more important than product information, reviews, and ratings.

Consider the cliché, “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” Well, the man who coined the term in the 1920’s was onto something because photography on your eCommerce website can be the difference between a consumer entering their credit card information to buy that new fishing pole, or letting that same item sit in their cart indefinitely—not completing the sale.

So let me ask you this: Would you consider the photos on your eCommerce platform attractive? Would you consider them quality images? If you were a customer, would you trust that the store you’re ordering from is going to send you exactly what you’re looking at?

The importance of quality photos on an eCommerce site is something that is overlooked too often. Whether it’s a good or bad feeling, photos undisputedly force us to feel something. Our brains struggle to distinguish the quality of the photo from that of the product. They are intertwined.
